The digestive processes of horses is under particular strain nowadays due to modern practices in husbandry and feeding. Horses are originally steppe dwellers and their digestive system has evolved to feed on infertile, sparse meadows. However, our meadows are often too lush and rich for the horses. Furthermore, the horse is a grazer and eats constantly - its stomach is designed for a constant supply of food and it spends up to 18 hours a day eating when in the outdoors. Gastric acid is constantly and continuously produced in the horse's stomach. This is aggressive and can attack the stomach lining if it's not neutralised by appropriate food. Long breaks in eating can therefore cause stomach irritation and, in the worst case, colic.

Such problems can be prevented by making sure your horse is fed an appropriate diet and is kept in the best conditions recommended for the species. If certain digestive functions are already out of balance, support your horse with the necessary dietary supplements.
